Seeking Reproductive Justice in Philly School Spaces

Dr. Jones is an educator by training, but she recognizes that schoolspaces can often be punitive and discriminatory, so she's teaching Black girls to advocate for themselves and their communities through culturally competent civic education.

Dr. Tawanna Jones is Associate Director of the Urban Teaching Apprenticeship Program at the University of Pennsylvania and founder of the Philadelphia-based non profit We REIGN Inc. Before joining the Penn faculty, Dr. Jones worked in the Philly School District for over two decades as a special education teacher and school psychologist. She also led professional development workshops through the American Federation of Teachers, with a focus on instructional strategies and social emotional learning.

Avalon Hinchman is a student at the University of Pennsylvania studying medical anthropology, with minors in bioethics and Indigenous studies, and a Philly native. She's passionate about improving access to culturally competent care through community empowerment and centering Indigenous ways of knowing and doing, particularly at the intersection of reproductive health. Avalon aspires to a career that helps work to address the impacts of racism and colonialism on global healthcare systems.
